Topic: Monte Carlo Methods; 3 hrs. This course covers some basic and advanced Monte Carlo methods. Specific topics covered include Monte Carlo integration; variance reduction techniques; Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC); simulation optimization; gradient estimation; and applications in telecommunication networks and finance. The prerequisites for this course are probability and statistics and computer programming experience in Matlab, R, C, Fortran, or Pasca. An integral part of the course is a project designed to address a particular problem or to investigate an advanced methodology of interest.

Applications are frequently encountered in customer service situations as well as transport and telecommunication. This course will cover the basics and some contemporary methods in queuing theory.
