Seminar in selected genres, themes, or authors of the Middle Ages. Epic, lyric, and didactic works in prose and verse are read in the original language.

Same as MDVL 571. May be repeated to a maximum of 12 hours if topics vary. Prerequisite: GER 510 and GER 515 or equivalent, or consent of instructor.

Topic: Weibliches Sprechen in der mittelhochdeutschen Literatur (Female Speech in Middle High German Literature) This course examines the female voice in medieval German literature, from a number of genre and theoretical perspectives from minnesang through medieval epics, male authors and and females speaking, investigating various forms of women's speech , including in forms of the lied, women speaking among themselves (mothers and daughters, for example) , and the representation of female "values" in speech. Texts include key works of MHG literature: the Nibelungenlied, Arthurian romance, including works by Hartmann and Wolfram, and a cross section of poets and poetic genres. Students are expected to have successfully completed Middle High German as a prerequisite.. The course is taught entirely in German. Instructor: Dr. Andrea Grafetstaetter
