In this course we will explore the imaginary Orient of French literature and the visual arts from the Middle Ages to the nineteenth century. We will encounter and examine Turks, Persans, Moors and other �orientals� in texts of many different genres (novel, short story, poetry, tragedy, travel narrative) by Rabelais, Racine, Mme de Lafayette, Montesquieu, Voltaire, Hugo and others. Readings and class discussion in French.
