This course, open to both graduate students and advanced undergraduates, addresses recurrent themes in twentieth-century Chinese art. Themes include encounters with Euro-American political and cultural power, the trauma of historical memories, the sense of language, and national identity. Films from the 1980s form a core for the discussion of these themes. Students will have the opportunity to study and research works of contemporary Chinese art in the Krannert Art Museum and Kinkead Pavilion.
