TOPIC: The Black Book: A Weird Journey in Istanbul This course restricted to Unit One students. The Black Book is going to help us understand what it is to be a writer, what writers write about, and what literature is all about. Authors often talk about things that everybody know, but don?t realize, they know. It is the aim of this course to explore this knowledge and how it functions in the overall structure of a literary text. Close reading of The Black Book is going to help us explore in detail this world at once familiar and mysterious. Life, death, love, journey, mystery, the doppelg?nger, East-West relations, the city of Istanbul, and representations of the Turkish culture in literature are some of the themes we are going to focus on.
