Topic: Art and Culture of the Spanish Golden Age. This course surveys the art and culture of 17th century Spain. Considering different artistic genres (religious paintings, history paintings, portraiture, still-life, and mythological paintings), artistic terminology (modestia, singularidad, emulacin, rivalidad, engao, desengao, valenta), cultural concepts (spanishness, counter-reformation, propaganda, decline) and literary texts (mystical writings, picaresque novel, poetry and plays), the course will provide a broad understanding of key issues of Golden Age Spain, emphasizing the role of art and the artist within that culture. The course will engage students in a variety of activities, including the reading of a 17th century novel/play, a film screening, a visit to the Krannert Art Museum, and a visit to the Rare Book Library. Meet with SPAN 301. Open to all University students.
