This section meets concurrently with LIS 490. Topic: China and World Communications This course explores the ongoing restructuring of Chinese and world communications and the interlocks between the two. We will study and look for connections between three unfolding histories: the development of digital technologies and the emergence of new network systems and applications; changing institutional policies for networks and networked services; and shifting relations between China�s political economy and the global market system. Scrutiny will be given especially to new media and telecommunications infrastructures, power dynamics, and social and political conflict. A course project will be to identify and evaluate relevant bibliographic resources. A research paper (topic to be approved by instructor) is required.
