Section Info:
Topic: Afriques-sur-Seine If cinema is a dream machine and colonialism was the space of fantasm and fetishism, film provides a particularly rich territory for examining the relationship between the cultural productions and representations of the Francophone hexagonal and African worlds. This course thus examines the regards croiss between France and its former West and North African colonies across the 20th century and into the 21st. Topics covered include: gender, documentary, ethnography, realism, allegory, the representation of history, militantism, censorship, the political stakes of auteurism, exilic cinema, target audiences, internationalism, post-colonialism. Significant background in film studies and or French/Francophone studies required (for instance, FR 208, CINE 261, or equivalent/higher). Meets concurrently with FR 552. Taught in English, all films subtitled.
Restriction(s):
