Credit: 3 hours.

Develops students' ability and skills to analyze, assess, and critically evaluate media images, words, sounds, and representations that comprise mass culture, and to understand the media's roles in the contemporary world. As part of their learning in the course, students prepare their own media, use logs and evaluate their exposure to media and advertising.

Prerequisite: Freshman or sophomore standing.

COMM 166: Media Literacy: Moving from Consumer to Critic Media literacy develops students' abilities to step away from the position of media consumer and into the role of media critic. Students analyze and criticize words, images, sounds, music and representations from television, film, the Internet, etc. The goal is to increase their understanding of media's roles in the contemporary world generally and in their own lives specifically. Multimedia will be used in lecture and in student presentations. Note: This course is restricted to freshmen and sophomores.
