Advanced study of issues and literature relevant to emerging new media. Discusses the intersection of art, technology, and society. Explores aesthetics, criticism, historical work, and current work in this area.

3 undergraduate hours. 4 graduate hours. May be repeated to a maximum of 6 undergraduate or 8 graduate hours. Prerequisite: ARTH 111, ARTH 112, and junior standing.

Topic: Exhibition History and Curatorial Practice: This course will explore various methodological approaches to curatorial practice, from the single artist retrospective to the thematic group show, and will examine several seminal exhibitions in the history of 20th century art as well recent important museum exhibitions and international biennales. Our studies of curatorial practice and exhibitions will allow for in-depth discussions both of particular artists� works and curatorial approaches to the selection, installation, and written examination of art works. Seminal texts by such authors as Julie Ault, Douglas Crimp, Brian O�Doherty, and others will be discussed and such exhibitions as the 1913 Armory show, "Primary Structures" from 1966 at the Jewish Museum, and Harald Szeemann�s 1969 "When Attitudes Become Form," as well as numerous others, will be studied. Enrollment is restricted to students accepted into the Illinois at the Phillips Collection program in Washington D.C. Course meets in Carriage House Studio, The Phillips Collection. Class will not meet on March 19. Graduate Section.
