Section Info:
The Art of the Skyscraper, 3 hours. This course introduces non-architecture students to the forces that have defined the design, construction, and image of skyscrapers and their urban environments. The skyscraper is the quintessential building of the modern age, and through its comprehensive use of structure, materials, and building systems, encompasses all aspects of architecture. Tall buildings give shape to the cities in which they are built, and the cities give shape to the buildings. Through the study of this significant modern building type students will learn that their realization is the collaboration between the architect and the engineer and a synthesis of art and technology of the modern era. First Year Discovery Program course. Registration restricted to freshmen. Students should enroll in only one Discovery course.
