Section Title:
Fisheries Legislation
Section Info:
This course is designed for NRES graduate students studying some aspect of fish and wildlife ecology. Each student will concentrate on one of six pieces of major federal fisheries-related legislation (e.g., Magnuson-Stevens, Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, etc), documenting a case study in detail that shows how the legislation either failed to accomplish the goal or was instrumental in achieving it. In this way, the class will learn why some laws work and others don't. Results of the semester's work will be presented at an all-day Symposium - tentatively scheduled for Saturday, Dec 13, 2008 and open to the public. This symposium will feature the work of both this class and LAW 792. The students will construct two products for their grade. First is a poster of the case study to be presented and explained at the Symposium. The second is a stand-alone PowerPoint presentation explaining the case study that will be put up on a special website to house it. Contact the instructor at philipp@uiuc.edu for permission to enroll.

Indigenous Ecologies
Section Info:
'Indigenous Ecologies'. This section is for 3 credit hours, and Graduate Students should also enroll in CRN 51626 in order to receive full credit for the work that will be required of them. This interdisciplinary seminar explores the relationship between human experience and natural environment in native North America. Assigned readings survey historical and contemporary case studies in New World ethnoecology, including noteworthy examples of adaptation in the context of settler colonialism and in response to the dominant paradigm of scientific ecology. Class discussions are supplemented by audiovisual materials, guest speakers, and relevant campus events. Students have the opportunity to gain a basic understanding of ecological traditions among American Indians; to conduct a research project focusing on a particular theme, issue, region, or community; and to develop their critical skills for use in academic, professional, and personal settings.
