Examines the basic elements of jazz composition from melodic, harmonic, rhythmic, and tone color perspectives focusing on distinctive styles of jazz. Promotes a better understanding of various jazz compositional styles, jazz composers, creative elements and abilities, melody writing, harmonic systems, rhythmic compositional devices, and jazz reharmonization techniques.

Prerequisite: MUS 224 and MUS 363.
