Section Info:
First Year Discovery Program course. Registration restricted to freshmen. Students should enroll in only one Discovery course. TOPIC: Language, Gender, & Social Interaction in the Global Village. This course focuses on the relationship between language and gender by analyzing how women and men use and interpret language in their everyday lives. Adopting a cross-cultural perspective, we will compare language use in the US and other countries to see how gender and power differences are relected across languages and cultures. The class will consider: the extent to which women and me should be considered members of different cultural groups; how gender and power relationships are reflected in language in different cultures; the factors besides gender that lead to language differentiation, and how these factors interact with gender. In addition to assigned readings, students will meet individually each week with international students from different language backgrounds who are enrolled in the Intensive English Institute. Data from these interactions as well as from radio, TV and other sources will serve as the empirical basis for student projects.
Restriction(s):
Restricted to students with Freshman class standing.
