Topic: Rediscovering Chicago's Black Migration: Text and Image in the Chicago Defender - This course will focus on the historical, economic, social, cultural and political connections between news stories and photographs that appeared in the Chicago Defender in relation to the mass movement known as Chicago's Black Migration. Students will look at the structures in American society that contributed to the extension and reification of the diasporic flow of individuals of African descent throughout the Americas, including among and across the geographies of North America. Chicago was the major northern site where African Americans migrated in search of a new life away from the lingering aftershocks of slavery. Scholars have identified the Defender as playing a central and significant role in the Great Migration because its news and opinion stories represented the Windy City as a land of economic opportunity free from the manifest and latent vestiges of the segregated South. Students will examine and engage the Defender as a primary source, including analyzing text, photographs, letters, commentary and advertisements. Local involvement in the Great Migration and the intersections of class, education, skin complexion, and economic status also will be reviewed and assessed. Students may participate in an optional field trip to Chicago on Amtrak during which they will relive the train ride along the same northbound tracks as women and men traveling from Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee. While in Chicago, students will research not only visual, anecdotal and material culture, but also enduring elements of the Great Migration, including visits to Bronzeville and other landmark sites and points of interest. First Year Discovery Program Course. Registration restricted to freshmen. Students should enroll in only one Discovery course.
