Topic: Washi Art: The art of Japanese Paper. The instructor, Kyoko Ibe, is a world-renowned, Japanese washi (Japanese hand made paper) artist. In this studio class, students will study the history of washi, the concept of yugen, as well as explore various techniques of making washi. Students will learn contemporary washi methods as well as creating and preparing their own installation of washi art. Yugen is a word used to describe the profound, remote, and mysterious - those things which cannot easily be grasped or expressed in words, yet revealing spiritual strength and grace that impart transcendental power and beauty. Class meets in Noble Hall, room 22.
