LIS590CIO begins with a Monday evening class on June 11, 2007 and then picks up the following weekend with participation in the 3d annual Community as Intellectual Space symposium, whose theme is "Our Barrio, Our Stories, Ourselves: The Role of Oral History in Community Building." The course concludes with three all-day Saturday sessions, ending on July 7. 590 CIO students attending the Community as Intellectual Space symposium [location: Puerto Rican Cultural Center, 2739 W. Division St., Chicago] are entitled to a special reduced registration fee of $60, which includes some meals. Class meetings: Mon., June 11 (6-9pm); Fri., June 15 (4:30-9pm); Sat., June 16 (8am-6pm); Sun., June 17 (9am-2:30pm); Sat., June 23 (9-Noon & 1-4pm); Sat., June 30 (9-Noon & 1-4pm); Sat., July 7 (9-Noon & 1-4pm). Part 1 (June 11, 15, 16, 17) includes readings, an initial class session, conference participation, structured experiential learning, and a final paper that describes and reflects on the student's in- and out-of-class activities. Part 2 (June 23 and 30, July 7) includes a different set of readings, class sessions, a set of exercises, and a final paper. If the student is enrolled for 2 credit hours, they would take EITHER Part 1 or Part 2; if enrolled for 4 credit hours, they would take *BOTH* Part 1 and Part 2.
