Section Info:
The Geography of Crime, 3 hours. Police novels, detective novels, film noir, and the thriller. All readings in English. The relatively low level of crime in Scandinavia corresponds inversely to an astonishingly prolific genre of crime writing successfully exported around the world. The way Scandinavian culture represents crime, police procedure, and punishment (rehabilitation) says a great deal about its value system. This course contrasts ideas of Scandinavian nature (pristine, clean, innocent) and the Scandinavian nations (recently ethnically homogenous, today fully multi-ethnic) with representations of crime. We will study fiction and films about crime, nature, and national ideology. First Year Discovery Program Course. Registration restricted to freshmen. Students should enroll in only one Discovery course.
Restriction(s):
Restricted to students with Freshman class standing.
