Section Info:
An anthropological approach to central and Inner Asia, encompassing the former Soviet "stans" as well as Xinjiang, Mongolia, and Tuva. Emphasis on contemporary cultural issues with a look at historical and political aspects as they relate to current social contests. Topics include: ethnicity, minority/majority issues, and national building; women and Islam; Sufism, animism and pilgrimage; medicine and healing; nomadism, settlement, and the environment; nationalism and music; and the transnational context of Central Asia. Meets with REES 596 (cross-listed with ANTH 515 1G and ANTH 399 1U).
