Ethics and Social Policy, 3 hours. This course is about justice. The course will critically examine the norms and values that govern the web of relations that exist between the individual person and societal structures and powers. The course will compare and contrast conservative and liberal understandings of the relation between individual and society, citizen and government. We will begin with a careful look at the general social, ethical, and legal systems presented in two classics of Western Civilization. We will then shift from theoretical issues to applied oneslooking at the ethical, social, and legal issues involved in three contemporary social controversiesabortion, lesbian and gay rights, and affirmative action.
