MUSIC, COMPUTERS, AND GLOBALIZATION, 2 hours. The definition of globalization ("to make global, worldwide in scope") describes well the aim of most contemporary art music. The course offers an insight in the field of Computer Music by giving the students the opportunity to work hands-on in a major such lab and shows ways in which the development of technology is facilitating the process of globalization. Both the negative and the positive impacts of globalization are discussed keeping in mind that globalization does not have to lead to the loss of originality and creativity or to the loss of regional identity. Music Composition Workshop Fusing the Elements, 2 hours. An active composition workshop for student composers of varying skills and backgrounds. The course will introduce students to a wide sampling of compositional techniques and approaches, and also to a large number of traditional and culturally diverse instruments. There will be an emphasis on Experimental and Cross-Cultural music, as broadly defined over the past 50-100 years. Improvisation and jazz/rock/pop elements will be integrated into the fabric of the course. Students will have the opportunity to invent instruments for which they can compose, and a portion of the course will include composition using computers. Music composed by participating students will be presented and discussed in class. The ability to read and write music at at least an introductory level is strongly preferred. VOCAL MUSIC IN THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN CONTEXT, 3 hours. Surveys the vocal music of African-Americans from the solo song to the gospel chorus. Vocal technique for jazz, R & B, and gospel music will be discussed, with particular attention given to text delivery, improvisation, and the extended use of the chest voice. As the course progresses, students will be asked to develop some performing and listening experience, to conduct scholarly research on the musical culture, and ultimately to design lessons to introduce selected repertoire from the cultural experience. In class together students will explore samples of songs that demonstrate African-American vocal music performance practice, and develop individual vocal technique through group vocal instruction. DIGITAL COMPOSITION: AN INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL AUDIO, MIDI AND MUSIC COMPOSITION, 3 hours. A hands-on introduction to music composition with digital audio, MIDI, and how to publishing your music on the Web. No prior experience with MIDI, sequencing, or audio editing is necessary. The course is divided into three parts. In the first section. students are introduced to digital sound representation and audio (waveform) editing. We next turn our attention to music sequencing: how to compose, record, and edit audio and MIDI together to create entire music compositions. In the last part of the course, we learn to record our music on CDs and to compress and link our compositions to html documents on the Web. The class will be held in CAMIL II Computer Lab at the School of Music. Students will have access to MIDI equipment and software programs during class and open lab hours. Included will be a large final composition of each student's own design involving the techniques covered in class. First Year Discovery Program Course. Registration restricted to freshmen. GROUP INSTRUCTION IN VOCAL TECHNIQUES AND INTERPRETATION, 3 hours. Emphasizes vocal development through an understanding of breathing, phonation, resonation, and articulation techniques. These techniques will be explored through the study and performance of such genres as classical, sacred, musical theater, jazz, and a broad spectrum of world music and popular forms. The emphasis will be on singing for the joy of making music as well as to increase musical ability and artistry. Multi-media will be used to enhance instruction and help develop appreciation of all styles of singing. All of the class will participate in a public recital at the end of the semester to demonstrate the semester's progress and achievement! First Year Discovery Program Course.
