The course is concerned with disputed problems of authenticity in Greco-Roman literature with analysis of the arguments and methodology used to determine authenticity. Can a convincing method be devised? Each meeting will be devoted to a famous example. One student will be asked to defend authenticity while a second student challenges it. Anonymous votes will be taken. Among those works to be discussed will be: Aeschylus, Prometheus, Euripides, Rhesus, Seneca, Octavia, Seneca's Epigrams, Plato, Seventh Epistle, Tacitus, de Oratoribus, Vergil, Moretum, Xenophon, Constitution of the Athenions, The Secret Gospel of Mark.
