North American Indians, 3 hours. This course helps students develop an understanding of the rich diversity of languages and cultures found among Native North American peoples from the perspectives of sociocultural and linguistic anthropology. Topics include: the EuroAmerican invention of the "Indian" and ongoing problems of representation; how language creates particular views of self and "reality"; philosophy, morals and humor through myth and storytelling; Plains Sign Language; language and landscape. First Year Discovery Program Course. Registration restricted to freshmen. Students should enroll in only one Discovery course.
