Comparative Political Behavior: This course examines the political behavior and opinions of common citizens in dissimilar national contexts. While much of the themes and questions in this field originate in the United States, our focus will be on research done in international contexts. Throughout the semester we will cover topics such as political participation and voting behavior, democratic values and skills, collective action and protest behavior, citizens and the economy, and mass attitudes associated with ethnic, national, and religious identities.

In this seminar, we address two questions: 1) to what extent are human social attitudes and behaviors a function of genetic and neurophysiological causes? 2) given man's newfound ability to alter our species' genetic makeup to what extent should government regulate this special kind of research? The course inevitably calls into question the relationships among political science, law, and biology. Only a rudimentary knowledge of genetics is required. Grades will be based on class attendance, participation, and a semester research project. Students need Professor Carmens written permission prior to enrollment.
