Topic: Intonation in Context - "Work on the phonology of intonation has been traditionally carried out on small-scale, controlled speech corpora recorded in laboratory-type settings. Recent tendencies towards more socially- and pragmatically-informed investigations, however, brought up important methodological and epistemological issues connecting phonologists to work in other fields, among them sociolinguistics and conversational analysis. This seminar will feature foundational and new work on the intonation of Romance languages (primarily French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and Catalan) alone and in comparison with other languages, and discuss contextually-relevant ways and means of analyzing intonation."
