Section Info:
New communication and information technologies have advanced forms of globalization involving the exchange and flows of knowledge and knowledge services. The digitalization, speed and compression of communication has reshaped the delivery of educational content, reinforced the notion of culture as a symbolic system, and led to the spread of global knowledge and research networks. A significant aspect of these developments involves fundamental changes to forms of scientific communication yet it appears that academics are currently largely unaware and unconcerned about these changes. At present there is an ethos of innovation and experimentation in both the commercial and academic worlds that has led to improvements and efficiencies in all phases of the knowledge production cycle including most recently publishing-on-demand and just-in-time printing, introduction of fully electronic editorial journal offices, online delivery of journals, complete digitalization of collections and archives, the creation of searchable databases, digitalization of book and series collections, development of webometrics, bibliometrics and citation analyses, as well as advances in web design and portal development. This course provides an introduction to these developments and to what changes are occurring in academic publishing with a focus on the analysis of education journals. Students may have to option to examine other discipline areas. Wednesday 4-7pm
