Section Info:
Poetry from Shakespeare to Stevens, 3 hours. This course will study the subject which is the shorter lyric poem in English from the Elizabethan period to the twentieth century, and on formal not free verse. The lyric poem, across four centuries, has served as a vehicle for all imaginable reflections-love, death, sex, friendship-and as a kind of verbal confessional in which the modern self articulates a crossing into the greater world. We will explore a rich variety of lyric poems and their uses, and study the principles of prosody so long considered indispensable to the poetic craft. James Scholar/First Year Discovery Program course. Registration restricted to freshmen in the James Scholar Program. Students should only enroll in one Discovery course.
