Topic: Collage/Photomontage Studio. Special Instructions: Graduate section. Enrollment is restricted to students accepted into the Illinois at the Phillips Collection program in Washington D.C. Beginning with an examination of the processes and ideas of Dada artists who utilized photo montage / collage and drawing in their art-making, this studio course will look at the contradictions and harmonies resulting from the juxtapositions of disparate materials and images. The work of contemporary artists, graphic novelists, children, and outsider/self taught artists will also be explored.

Technical skills of camera operation and printing will be taught in conjunction with studies of the work of contemporary photographers. These include in-class presentation of influences, ideas, material choices and problem solving techniques for photographers. Photographic assignments will be given and critiqued; we will also discuss the work of important contemporary photographers.
