Issues in Art Education

Study of fundamental issues affecting education in the visual arts; examines and explores the educational implications of the nature and value of art, the nature of the artist, and the development of the child as an artist and connoisseur.

May be repeated to a maximum of 16 hours.

Engaged Museums takes place in the UIUC Krannert Art Museum (KAM), and looks at how the KAM engages the interests of culturally diverse local communities. Students will learn about the museum�s curatorial practices and multicultural exhibitions; and they will work on teams to create new experiences for KAM Visitors. Students may also creatively explore how new technologies can be incorporated into museum educational practices. This course is open to all students. Prerequisites include love of art, love of people, and love to talk. Engaged Museums meets in the Giertz Education Center in the basement of KAM.

Section Info: Topic: Lacanian Approaches to Art and Education. This course offers opportunities to explore two major themes in Lacan�s work that are of particular importance for both art and education. One theme is the character of vision. Lacan questioned modernist notions that celebrate the visual, denied its primacy among the senses, associated it with power and made much of the distinction between the gaze and the look. The second theme is the nature of identity. Lacan claimed that identity is based on visual imagery and imagination, is never stable, is always mistaken, and is the origin of desire. No previous knowledge of Lacan is needed for this course. Students are encouraged to find ways in which the material may be relevant to their own interests in art or education. We will look at what Lacan wrote on these two topics and at selections from his many followers in relevant fields, such as film criticism, feminism, art history, postcolonial literature, visual culture, youth culture.
