Crises of Political Tolerance

Credit: 2 TO 4 hours.

Investigates the character of American political tolerance and freedom in times of crisis, through a series of case studies: images of the American "enemy"; the Red Scare after World War I; the internment of Japanese-Americans in World War II: McCarthyism; and the resentments generated by protest movements in the late 1960s.

3 undergraduate hours. 2 or 4 graduate hours. Prerequisite: One year of college history.
