Unified treatment of modern continuum mechanics: mathematical preliminaries; review of kinematics and general balance laws; general theory of mechanical constitutive equations, including material constraints and material symmetry.

Prerequisite: TAM 551.

Additions to course outline: Review of principles, key results and relative advantages of rational continuum mechanics, thermomechanics with internal variables, and rational extended thermomechanics. Introduciton to non-classical and/or coupled field theories: classical versus generalized thermoelasticity, quasi-continuum, lattice/particle-based theories, Cosserat-type models of solids and fluids, strain-gradient and non-local models, magnetoelasticity, piezoelectricity, thermodiffusion. Singular surfaces and waves.
