First Year Discovery Program Course. Registration is restricted to freshmen. Only one Discovery course per student. For course descriptions: http://www.provost.uiuc.edu/students/discovery/ger.htm This course is an introduction to the history of sexuality through literature. By reading literary texts, and discussing films based on those texts, the class attempts to reconstruct the historical and cultural contexts in which sexuality has been debated during the past three centuries; we will investigate the extent to which views of sexuality are influenced by gender, ethnic, and class stereotypes. The first part of the semester is devoted to analyzing the history of sexuality in the West, in particular, although not exclusively, by focusing on the German and French literary and cultural traditions. In the second part of the course, we shift our focus to the non-Western world, and especially to an examination of texts that document the role of sexuality in colonial history and in contemporary Third-World literature.
