Section Info:
Topic: "A Saint in the Museum: Sufi Arts at the Krannert" The first day of class will meet in the lobby of the Krannert Art Museum. This hands-on course will be taught in conjunction with the exhibition "A Saint in the City: Sufi Arts of Urban Senegal," which will open at the Krannert Art Museum in Fall 2006. After reading a body of literature on the dynamic arts and histories of contemporary Senegal, and gaining a solid understanding of the exhibition itself, students will be actively engaged in curatorial and outreach aspects of the exhibition. Students will research and write additional didactic materials, in the form of museum hand-outs, to complement areas of the exhibition covering themes such as reverse-glass painting, calligraphic art and healing devices, internationally recognized contemporary Senegalese artists, Mouridism, and so on. Students will also lead gallery discussions -- open to the public -- on their areas of research. Students will also develop and implement educational outreach programs to make the exhibition even more accessible to the local schools and communities. Interested students must contact professor for permission to register. Undergraduate section.
