Section Info:
Exploration of German literary and cultural production from the nineteenth to early twentieth century. Inquiry into how knowledge is produced in literature that intersects with developments in science, politics, technology, psychology, and philosophy. We question how cultural artifacts may shape political goals, and look at how power is used and abused in response to a troubled modernity. Texts by Heine, Storm, Nietzsche, Freud, Kafka. Readings and discussion in German.
