(HIST 160) Exploration of the extent and variety of relations between people and the environment, with special emphasis on pre-capitalist land use systems, illustrated with examples from the Midwest United States, tropical Africa, and tropical South America; the impact during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries of global capitalism; and a discussion of contemporary environmental concerns, starting with questions of land use.
