	39428	Lecture	A	3:00PM -4:50PM	R	402 Gregory Hall	Abramson, K	Part of Term: 1 Date Range: 08/25/04-12/10/04 Section Info: Strains of Contemporary Virtue Ethics In this seminar we will examine some of the most significant themes in, and versions of, a strain of philosophical ethics now popularly referred to as "virtue ethics." The course will begin with a study of some of the seminal articles in the contemporary field, including work by Foot and McDowell. We will then examine some recent work in each of three sub-fields of contemporary virtue ethics, i.e. neo-Aristotelian, new-Humean, and virtue ethicists who claim no historical predecessor. Our discussions throughout this part of the course will be devoted in part to the issue of whether "virtue ethics" has any special contributions to make to the debates in contemporary ethics, and if so, what might be those contributions. In the final section of he course, we will turn our attention to recent Kantian critiques and appropriations of virtue ethics in the work of e.g. Barbara Herman, Marcia Baron, and Jerome Schneewind. Requirements for the course: active class participation, one seminar presentation of 10-15 minutes (a written draft of which is due the week before your presentation), and a seminar paper.
