(ENGL 405) Reviews theory and research on the social and historical development of writing systems, including consideration of the relationship between oral and written language, writing and other graphic representation systems, alternative technologies, the evolution of writing systems, and the social functions of literacy.

Same as CI 563. Prerequisite: Admission to the graduate programs of a unit offering the graduate specialization in Writing Studies, or consent of instructor.
