| 2 hours Discovery course. A WORLD VIEW OF CONTEMPORARY COMPOSITION, 2 hours. A look at and listen to important contributions in contemporary art music of the past 50-100 years, drawing on international contributions, primarily from the United States, and countries in Europe and Asia. The integration, fusion, and juxtaposition of diverse national and cultural sources, has lead to powerful and meaningful results from composers and musicians around the world. The focus will begin with experimental composition and performance practices, however, jazz, rock, popular music, electronic and computer music, and improvisation will be included. The class will also function as a composition workshop, where the ideas, techniques, and approaches studied in the music of others will serve as models for student compositions, which we will listen to and discuss as part of the class. The ability to read and write music at at least an introductory level is strongly preferred. First Year Discovery Program Course. Registration restricted to freshmen.
